The Liberty Hotel in Boston

Editorial staff

In 1843, Boston Mayor Marin Brimmer proposed the construction of a new jail to replace the existing one. The design was in the hands of architects Gridley James Fox Bryant and Dwight Louis. Twenty years later, the building was opened and its modern facilities became the prototype for new prison design in the country. In 1990, the Charles Street Jail closed its doors.

The building, considered one of the best examples of the "Boston Granite style" of the mid-19th century, was once "home" to some of Boston's most legendary inmates, including the famous activist Malcom X or the corrupt politician James Michael Curley.

Now, in this former prison converted into The Liberty Hotel, elements of the old building such as the octagonal floor plan, walkways, and arched windows have been retained. What was once the prison courtyard has now been converted into a cozy garden that invites guests to relax. The exterior of the hotel has remained virtually intact, preserving its distinctive style from the time of its construction. Inside, elegant mahogany woodwork in dark tones stands out, along with curtains, cushions, and upholstery in shades of maroon, gray, and pink.

The Liberty Hotel stands out as an exceptional and unique accommodation, marked by the history it has from its past. Inside there are three restaurants with very varied proposals and to the taste of the consumer: Clink, which offers elaborate American-style dishes, Alibi, a Cocktail Lounge in which they also offer food and the Scampo restaurant, which means escape in Italian and offers a menu of food from Italy.
